What is Foot Drop? Foot drop is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. It may result in the feeling of being compelled, or even forced, to drag the front of the foot on the ground while walking. Foot drop is not a disease in itself, but rather a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular, or anatomical problem. It can be temporary or permanent, with causes including nerve injury, brain or spinal disorders, and muscle disorders.
An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is often used to treat foot drop. If the foot drop is caused by hemiplegia, peroneal nerve stimulation can be an option. Foot drop due to direct trauma to the dorsiflexors calls for surgical repair.
What are the Symptoms of Foot Drop? Common symptoms of foot drop include: - Difficulty lifting the front part of the foot - Pain in the foot - Weakness - Numbness on the shin or top of the foot - High stepping walk - Complete loss of foot function
